Hacienda López de Haro 2017 Reserva (750ml)

The Hacienda López de Haro collection is born from the heart of the Rioja Denomination of Origin. La Sonsierra, in the heart of Rioja Alta, is flanked to the north by the Sierra de Cantabria and to the south by the Ebro River. The microclimate that is generated is perfect for the vineyard, especially for Tempranillo. López de Haro combines the excellent conditions of the grape with the Rioja tradition to create elegant, expressive and aromatic wines.

Hailed as the star red variety in Spain’s most celebrated wine region, Tempranillo from Rioja, or simply labeled, “Rioja,” produces elegant wines with complex notes of red and black fruit, crushed rock, leather, toast and tobacco, whose best examples are fully capable of decades of improvement in the cellar.

Rioja wines are typically a blend of fruit from its three sub-regions: Rioja Alta, Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Oriental, although specific sub-region (zonas), village (municipios) and vineyard (viñedo singular) wines can now be labeled. Rioja Alta and Alavesa, at the highest elevations, are considered to be the source of the brightest, most elegant fruit, while grapes from the warmer and drier, Rioja Oriental, produce wines with deep color, great body and richness.

Winemaker Notes

Medium-high depth wine, ruby red color with roof tile rim, which denotes its long barrel aging and its peaceful bottle aging. Powerful on the nose with primary aromas of ripe fruit accompanied by complex spicy and balsamic notes and a slight touch of vanilla. Balanced on the palate, it is a round and unctuous wine with ripe and sweet tannins, providing the wine with a long aftertaste: an elegant Rioja classic.

Professional Ratings

  • 91Wine Enthusiast

Aromas of cassis, black tea and a touch of earth waft from the glass. An earthy note transitions to the palate, joined by purple plum, red cassis, caramel and summer farm stand flavors set into stiff tannins that dawdle into a chewy finish.

  • 90James Suckling

Fine roasted spices and a hint of vanilla and tobacco leaf to the bright cherries and plums. Medium-bodied and firm on the palate with some grainy tannins and a medium-long finish. Some more wood tannins here that will need some time to integrate. Tempranillo and gracious.
