Burgundy is the best wine region in the world. The heart of Burgundy is the Cote d’Or, a strip of land where hills meet a vast plain and the slope provides the perfect soil and sun exposure to grow Pinot Noir and Chardonnay that isn’t matched anywhere else. Other key regions include the northerly Chablis making the world’s best unoaked Chardonnay, and Cote Chalonnais, Macon, and Beaujolais to the south. The latter is a distinct region in its own right but technically part of Burgundy.

The vineyard has been shaped over the centuries by the Dukes of Burgundy, by monks and by winegrowers. A bottle of Burgundy is a piece of French heritage. The story of the Domaine Armand Heitz began with the Nié-Vantey family, which was well-known in the wine business during the 1860s. In 1900, Georges Lochardet, a successful wine merchant from the Côte de Beaune, married Marcelle Nié. They owned 20 hectares of grapevines as well as a few estates. Their son Armand Lochardet inherited half of the properties, which he worked on before leaving them to his three children.

In 2011, Armand Heitz (grandson of Armand Lochardet), fresh out of his school of oenology, took the helm of the Chassagne-Montrachetestate. Permaculture and agroecology were like a mantra for him. As a result, the work environment of the family business greatly improved. In the vineyard, Armand does the seeding, de-budding and composting on his own, as well as plenty of other tasks. This policy of non-interventionism, added to grapes of high quality are a winning combination.
